Stop Waiting: Why There’s No Perfect Time to Start Meditating
“The mistake is that you think you have time.” – Zen proverb
We often tell ourselves that someday we’ll slow down. That later we’ll make time for self-care, start that meditation practice, or finally commit to our well-being. But the truth is—waiting may be the very thing standing in the way of the peace and clarity you crave.
The Illusion of “Enough Time”
Many people are caught in a loop of waiting:
Waiting for the right moment
Waiting for more money, more energy, or fewer responsibilities
Waiting for the kids to leave home, the job to ease up, the chaos to calm down
But the perfect moment doesn’t exist. If you wait to meditate until life slows down, you may never start at all.
What Changed My Perspective Forever
In 2012, I was diagnosed with cancer – on my birthday! – and everything shifted. I stopped waiting. I stopped assuming I had time to spare. And I started living with intention.
This experience taught me something I now share with all my students: The time to begin is now.
Too Busy to Meditate? That’s Exactly Why You Need It
If you think you're too busy to meditate, that’s a red flag, not a reason to delay. Meditation isn't another task on your to-do list. It's a powerful reset button for your nervous system and your mind.
Here’s what even five minutes a day can do:
Relax your overstimulated brain
Help you focus and concentrate
Ground you in the present moment
And yes, especially when life is chaotic, meditation becomes even more essential.
Instead of “When,” Ask Yourself “Why”
If you’ve been postponing a meditation practice (or anything important to you), try shifting the question.
Don’t ask:
“When will I have time?”
Ask:
“Why am I still waiting?”
This small shift in perspective can move you out of paralysis and into action—without needing everything to be perfect first.
Remember: You don’t need more time – you need a moment of presence. Start where you are. (If you're already meditating, wonderful! Keep going). The practice is especially valuable when life feels messy or uncertain.
